Lake Travis Camping
One of the best ways of enjoying the natural outdoors of Lake Travis is camping. There are several camping sites available, where some are primitive giving the experience of being far away from the city ideal for the adventurous kind, and there are the ones with amenities telling you that you are not too far from civilization. Whatever you choose, camping at Lake Travis is a unique experience.
In case you are planning a trip with your family its better to book in advance, as peak season sees a large crowd coming to witness the events at Austin, where the locals decide to camp in the outskirts in an attempt to avoid the crowd and traffic, thus filling up the area. The camping rate is in proportion to the distance from downtown Austin. Camping at Jonestown or Lakeway, both of which are located on the eastern border of Lake Travis, is costlier compared to other sites such as Spicewood, which is a little out of way, about 15 miles from the city. However, it is better for you if you don't want to spend too much on camping.
There are many places to camp. For the primitive and adventurous kind, Arkansas Bend Park is the ideal place to set their tents. Tucked away on the northern shore of Lake Travis, Arkansas Bend Park is surrounded by the Lago Vista community. Besides camping, the park offers opportunity to indulge in activities such as fishing, hiking or simple picnicking, watching the beautiful shoreline and the rocky waterfront.
Another great place to go camping at Lake Travis is the Pace Bend Park offering a great mix of wildlife and recreational activities. The place is great for a family camping excursion, where the park is maintained as a wildlife preserve. The western side of the park comprises a number of rocky coves and high limestone cliffs, providing some breathtaking views of Lake Travis, especially around the time of sunset. You can also see some whitetail deer, raccoons, fox, ringtail cats and a number of birds, great fun especially with kids.
Cypress Creek Park too is a great place to go camping in Lake Travis area. It is located in the picturesque Hill Country of Texas; however there is only one entrance point through the Bullick Hollow Road. It is about a half hour drive from downtown Austin, thus easily accessible on a vehicle. Apart from camping it also offers opportunity for fishing, boating and picnicking. The park has a cove and boat ramp, from where basin area of Lake Travis can be easily accessed. The park is actually on a sloping waterfront.
Camping is great fun, however it is best to make sure the type of setting you are looking for, though Arkansas and Cypress Creek has amenities such as picnic tables, BBQ grills, boat ramp and restrooms, the campsite are generally primitive in nature, and one needs to carry camping equipment as well as drinking water.
